How Many English Credits Are Required for a Liberal Arts Degree

CLAS Baccalaureate Degrees

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers three degrees at the baccalaureate level:

The bulk of students in the College earn a B.A. degree. The B.A. degree may be earned with a major in all departments and programs in the College except atmospheric scientific discipline. Early and Continuous Enrollment in English and Math (All Degrees)

Students must enroll the offset semester at KU in the English language composition course appropriate for their placement and must go on to have English courses until they have completed ENGL 102 Critical Reading and Writing (or ENGL 105, the honors equivalent).

No later than the second semester in CLAS, all students must enroll in the mathematics course in which they have been placed and must go along to take mathematics courses until they have completed MATH 101 Algebra or MATH 104 Precalculus Mathematics. Students who demonstrate eligibility to enroll directly in calculus through ACT, Saturday, or placement test scores are exempt from this early and continuous enrollment requirement.

Requirements for Graduation (All Degrees)

Grade-Point Average Required for Graduation

General Education Degree Requirements

Major Requirements

Students must complete a major to graduate with a degree in CLAS, with the exception of the B.G.South. Liberal Arts and Sciences pick. Designated Admission Course Requirements and Minimum Admission Grade-Point Boilerplate

Special Major

Students who experience that their best interests cannot be served by the majors listed may petition for a special major (B.A. or B.G.South.), if they follow the guidelines below. The following guidelines apply to special majors:

Minors

CLAS offers more than 40 canonical minors. These are open up to all students in the College regardless of the caste they are pursuing. The Schools of Compages, Blueprint and Planning; Instruction; Technology; Journalism and Mass Communications; Music; Nursing; and Social Welfare permit their students to earn minors.

Requirements for the minor vary, but all must be at least xviii hours including 12 hours at the junior/senior level (numbered 300 and higher up). 9 of the inferior/senior-level courses must be taken in residence at KU. CLAS General Education Caste Requirements, B.A. and B.M.Southward.: English

English Requirement

Completion of any degree at KU, too as successful functioning in order after graduation, requires that students develop proficiency in English composition and literature written report. Students must consummate

In general, students should enroll in ENGL 101, with the following exceptions:

1. Students who take transfer credit equivalent to ENGL 101 at other institutions should enroll in ENGL 102. Students attending summertime orientation enrollment who are enrolled in such courses at other institutions should enroll in ENGL 102.
2. Students who have transfer credit equivalent to ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 at other institutions should enroll in a 200-level English course. CLAS General Didactics Caste Requirements, B.A. and B.G.S.: Statement and Reason

CLAS General Didactics Degree Requirements, B.A. and B.Thousand.S.: Mathematics

Mathematics Requirement

Mathematical concepts and reasoning are used in almost all areas of human discourse. Students not prepared to accept either MATH 101 or MATH 104 should enroll in MATH 002 Intermediate Mathematics. MATH 002 is a developmental course that does not count in the credit hours required for graduation. Students who are eligible (as determined by the department) to enroll in a course for which one of the canonical 2nd-level courses is prerequisite are exempt from the mathematics requirement.

Placement in showtime mathematics courses is strictly enforced. Students not meeting prerequisites for a mathematics class they are enrolled in are administratively dropped from the course later notification. Students needing exceptions should consult the mathematics department for dates and times of placement examinations.

Students may qualify for retroactive credit in mathematics by completing the 2d course in a sequence with a grade of C or higher. Students passing MATH 116, MATH 122, or MATH 142 with an A, B, or C receive credit for MATH 115 or MATH 121 after consulting the mathematics section.

CLAS General Instruction Degree Requirements, B.A. and B.Grand.S.: Western Civilization

Western Civilisation Requirement

The Western civilization reading program deals with classical texts in Western thought from ancient times to the present. Students encompass an assigned reading list, supplemented with lectures and discussion groups. Students must complete a 2-course sequence. The standard sequence is HWC 204 and HWC 205. Non–Western Civilization Requirement

CLAS General Instruction Degree Requirements, B.A. and B.G.S.: Principal Form

Principal Form Distribution Requirement

Principal courses offer introductions to the breadth of disciplines in the College. They acquaint students with the subject matter in an expanse, with the types of questions that are asked almost that subject matter, with the knowledge that has been developed and is now basic to the area, and with the methods and standards by which claims to truth are judged.

Students must complete courses in topical groups in 3 major divisions (humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, and social sciences). Retroactive Credit

• vi hours of retroactive credit are awarded to a student with three or iv years of high school foreign language who enrolls initially at KU in a quaternary-level course and receives a grade of C or higher.
• 9 hours of retroactive credit are awarded to a student with 4 years of high school foreign language who enrolls initially at KU in a linguistic communication class with a fourth-level course as a prerequisite and receives a class of C or higher.

To authorize for retroactive credit, the student's initial academy-level enrollment in the foreign language must be at KU. After completing the KU course with a course of C or higher, the student must verify his or her loftier schoolhouse record with the department. The pupil's KU transcript shows the number of credit hours awarded only no letter form.

The Bachelor of General Studies caste may be earned through 2 options. The first B.Chiliad.S. choice requires concentrated study in 2 or more than areas or disciplines, specifically completion of at least ane major and additionally

Overlap Between Requirements

A grade may be used to fulfill a full general pedagogy caste requirement and a minor or major requirement. One course overlap is allowed between major requirements and pocket-size requirements. No course may fulfill both a master course distribution requirement and a not-Western culture or second-level mathematics course requirement. Laboratory science courses designated as principal courses may fulfill both the laboratory science requirement and one of the distribution requirements. No complimentary-standing laboratory course may by itself fulfill either the laboratory science requirement or a principal course requirement.
